Bands and groups

In a band or instrument group you play covers and your own songs together with a few others. The school year includes the band school’s concerts, and in spring everyone who wants to can record during the studio week.

What happens in the groups

Playing together

Groups are formed by age and playing experience. During the school year, the groups perform at the band school’s concerts and take part in the studio recording week.

A band has about five players, on drums, bass, guitar, keyboards and vocals. In band lessons we rehearse favourite songs chosen together by the students and the teacher, and make our own versions of them. All the band instruments are here at the band school, so no instrument of your own is needed.

For adults there is an adult band with 60-minute lessons. Adults are also welcome to join the pop singing group and the guitar and piano groups – no previous playing experience needed.

In the guitar and ukulele group (3–5 players) we practise the basics: accompanying with open chords and easy melodies, and later barre chords, chord arpeggios and strumming in different styles, among other things. The piano group (3 players) plays on electric pianos: accompanying, and learning pieces and grooves in different styles. In the drum club (about 4 players) we learn the basics of drumming, play rhythm exercises and practise grooves, fills and songs together. In the pop singing group (about 4 singers) we learn natural, relaxed use of the voice, and solo and harmony singing with pop songs – what matters most is singing together.

Your teachers are Sara and Matti. Sara teaches piano, vocals, guitar, bass, drums and bands. Matti teaches guitar, ukulele, bass, drums and bands.

FAQ

Questions about the groups

Is previous experience needed?

No. Groups are formed by age and playing experience, so beginners are welcome too.

Do I need my own instrument?

No. All the band instruments are here: drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and microphones. You are also welcome to bring your own instrument to lessons.

Can I join a band with another instrument?

Yes. You can also play something other than drums, bass, guitar, keyboards or vocals in a band – a wind or string instrument, for example. Just bring your own instrument to the lesson.

Can I start as an adult?

Yes. There is an adult band, and adults can also join the pop singing group and the guitar and piano groups.

Which language are lessons in?

We teach in Finnish, English and German.

When are the lessons?

Lesson times are agreed after you sign up: your teacher will get in touch to arrange a time.

How long does a group last?

The group meets for the whole school year, i.e. the autumn and spring terms, 15 times each term.

What if I am absent?

Lessons missed by a student are not made up. Please let your teacher know by message if you will be absent. If the teacher cancels a lesson, it is made up or a substitute teacher takes the lesson.

Do you also offer private lessons?

Yes. You can also take lessons in pairs or on your own, see pair and private lessons. You can also book single lessons there.
