What happens in playschool

Playing, singing and games

In music playschool, children play real instruments from the very first lesson. We practise rhythm through the body first – clapping, moving and singing – and then move on to the instruments. Every lesson includes singing and games, and through play music becomes familiar and safe. In a small group, children learn to listen to others, wait for their turn and play together. All the instruments are here at the band school, so no instrument of your own is needed.

There are two playschools. In drums playschool, children play drums – drum kits too – and all kinds of percussion, and learn music through the body and rhythm. In piano playschool, they learn to play familiar children’s songs on the piano through games and singing: they learn to find the notes on the keyboard and play their first pieces themselves. There is plenty of singing in both, so choose the instrument your child is curious about. Our playschool children also get to perform at the band school’s concerts.

Music playschool is taught by Sara Suvela, Master of Music and piano teacher (Sibelius Academy, music education).

Is previous experience needed?

No. For many children, playschool is their very first taste of making music.

Does my child need their own instrument?

No. All the instruments are at the band school.

Does a parent join the lesson?

No. The children play together as a group with the teacher. Parents are welcome to come and watch the first few lessons.

Which language are lessons in?

We teach in Finnish, English and German.

When are the lessons?

Lesson times are agreed after you sign up: your teacher will get in touch to arrange a time.

Lessons missed by a student are not made up. Please let the teacher know by message if your child will be absent. If the teacher cancels a lesson, it is made up or a substitute teacher takes the lesson.

What comes after playschool?

For schoolchildren from age 7 we offer bands and instrument groups: a guitar and ukulele group, a piano group, the drum club and a pop singing group. We also offer pair and private lessons.
